If you're feeling overwhelmed, here's exactly what to do, day by day, to take control of your Optimization Score situation.
Days 1-3: Assessment Phase
1. Export all current recommendations using Google Ads Editor (Recommendations → Export to CSV)
2. Categorize them: Safe bets (implement), Risky (test), Bad (dismiss)
3. Document your current scores: Optimization Score, Quality Score average, ROAS, CPA
4. Set up a Google Sheet to track everything (template available on my site)
Days 4-10: Implementation Phase
1. Implement all "safe bet" recommendations (extensions, policy fixes, etc.)
2. Set up 2-3 experiments for "risky" recommendations you want to test
3. Dismiss clearly bad recommendations with specific reasons
4. Set up custom alerts for new high-impact recommendations
Days 11-20: Testing Phase
1. Monitor your experiments daily but don't draw conclusions until day 14
2. Check search terms report every other day for new irrelevant queries
3. Add negative keywords proactively based on search terms
4. Adjust bids manually if automated bidding seems off
Days 21-30: Optimization Phase
1. Conclude experiments—implement winners, discard losers
2. Update your tracking sheet with results and learnings
3. Create a monthly review calendar invite
4. Build your custom dashboard showing score vs. performance metrics
By day 30, you should have: a clear understanding of which recommendations help your specific account, a system for evaluating new recommendations, and most importantly, improved actual performance metrics. Expect a 10-20% improvement in relevant metrics (ROAS, CPA, conversion rate) if you were previously blindly following recommendations, or a 15-30% improvement if you were ignoring Optimization Score completely.
The Bottom Line: What Actually Matters
After all this, here's what I actually do with my own campaigns and client accounts:
- I check Optimization Score monthly, not daily, and I care about the 3-month trend, not the absolute number
- I implement about 40-60% of recommendations—the ones that align with business goals and pass my three-question test
- I run experiments for anything questionable—never just click "apply" because Google says to
- I focus way more on Quality Score—it actually affects costs and ad position
- I document everything so I can explain my decisions to clients
